9D. Offices or team rooms with passive IR detectors

Dimmable HF ballasts and dynamic lighting control

Premises

When lighting is to be controlled by presence in offices, team rooms, small meeting rooms and other similar areas, people who use the rooms should not become dependent on the lighting being switched on and off automatically. They should switch the lighting on when needed (team room receives natural light through windows) and switch it off when they leave. It should also be possible to dim the lighting or turn it off to watch a film, for example.

Placement

PD-2200 detector with no. 51 lens. This gives the highest possible resolution and hence the ability to detect small movements.

The placement of the detector is very important in ensuring it works effectively! The illustration below shows where the detector should be placed. When combined with lens 51, which permits higher mounting, it provides optimum detection when people enter the area. It also ensures that the detector cannot see out through the door, so that people passing by in the corridor outside do not cause the lighting to stay on.
Placing the detector in the corner that is furthest from the door means that the detector can be mounted higher up, which reduces the risk of damage. With this mounting position, the detection fields are aimed slightly downwards so that they detect movement at a suitable height at the door.

Light sources

This application shows an example with light fittings that have dimmable HF ballasts.

Control system

The lighting system is dynamic and has light fittings with dimmable HF ballasts with 1-10 V control input, presence detection and level selectors. Dynamic lighting control operates as follows:

The lighting is switched on and off by one or more momentary, normally open pushbuttons (spring loaded) that are wired in parallel. The lighting can be adjusted to the desired level by holding in a pushbutton, up to a maximum level of 80 per cent that is set by the NV-2T level selector. If people leave the room without pressing the pushbutton to switch off the lighting, it is automatically dimmed to the base level (around 2 per cent), which is set by NV-2T. If no presence is detected within 12 hours (adjustable) the lighting is switched off completely.

The main benefits of dynamic lighting control are:

  • Uniform base lighting without the need for additional light fittings that are switched on 100 per cent of the time.
  • Possibility of saving 20-25 per cent during operation.
  • Lower working temperature for light fittings, with corresponding improvement in working life.
  • Less frequent switching and lower supplied power reduces wear to fluorescent coating, with corresponding improvement in life of light sources.
  • No need to stick to light source manufacturers’ recommended burn times, which drastically reduces operating times and increases savings.

See the handbook for a detailed description.

Detectors can be installed using widely available cable, such as EKKX 1 x 4 x 0.25 mm2. The same power supply can be used for up to 10 detectors and level selectors depending on the length of the wiring and placement.
Always calculate current requirements!
For information on setting up the IR detector and level selector, please refer to the manual that is supplied with each product, or to the handbook. Setting up is greatly simplified by using the BL-1 field indication diode (order no. 13035).

Important!

  1. Brief press turns on lighting immediately at maximum level.
  2. The light level can be increased or decreased by pressing and holding in a pushbutton.
  3. The lighting is dimmed automatically to the minimum level when presence is no longer detected.
  4. The lighting is switched off completely after the set time (1-2 hours).
  5. The lighting is switched on manually at the maximum level by pressing a pushbutton briefly.
  6. The lighting is switched off completely by pressing briefly.
